I personally like none of the options but to choose the best I would go with E. The sentence means to say that dolphins can be trained to communicate in the same fashion as humans can communicate.
A. are able to be trained as humans can be trained.
B. Past tense, same prob as A
C. Dolphins can be trained like humans can be trained
D. could be trained as humans could be trained.
E. Dolphins could be trained to communicate in the same manner as humans do communicate..meaning is clear here.
I am on a break !!

E.

to communicate ..as...humans..DO

you need some kind of verb for humans for the passage to be parallel.

IMO (E)

I was confused between C and E

C - concise (use of 'can' rather than 'able/capable'). I think 'like' can only be used with nouns/noun phrases??

E - Not concise. But the comparison between Dolphins and Humans looks more prominent.

and 'being' is almost always incorrect, but 'being' is not always incorrect.

Between C and D it is D since when comparing verbs,as should be used and not can.
IMO D
A,B,E are not correct since they are not concise.are able to be trained and capable of being trained to communicate can be
replaced by could be trained to communicate which is clear and concise.

Please answer with an explanation

"explored the possibility that dolphins" such a construction requires 'could'
D is perfect answer. Also 'do' can be assumed over here, so nothing wrong with D.
