Answer: D

Solution:

We can let x = the total number of employees and create the equation:

#(Total) = #(Promotion) + #(Salary Hike) - #(Both) + #(Neither)

x = 0.4x + 0.5x - 40 + 0.3x

x = 1.2x - 40

40 = 0.2x

200 = x

Answer: D
