We see that the recipe calls for 1 - 1/2 - 1/3 = 6/6 - 3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6 of the final mixture to consist of sauce and spices. If we let x = the number of pounds of beans that are needed, we can create the proportion: “x pounds of beans is to 1/3 as 6 pounds of sauces and spices is to 1/6.”
x / (1/3) = 6 / (1/6)
3x = 36
x = 12
