pregnancy tests

by Bek » Mon Aug 08, 2011 9:41 am
Chemical pregnancy tests that measure the presence of human chorionic gonadtropin (HCG) sometimes exhibit a false negative, indicating that the woman is not pregnant when in fact she is; the tests can also give a false positive response, indicating that the woman is pregnant when she actually is not. Consumers should seek the pregnancy test with the lowest proportion of false negative results in order to most accurately detect pregnancy with an at-home test.

The conclusion to the left is most strongly supported by which of the following, if true?

A) Some ultrasounds can detect pregnancy as early as one week into the gestation.
B) Early symptoms of a pregnancy can include nausea, increased hunger, and disturbed sleep patterns.
C) Prenatal medical supervision should begin as soon after conception as possible.
D) All at-home pregnancy tests have the same rate of inconclusive test results.
E) All at-home pregnancy tests produce the same proportion of false positive results.

Hi,

This is a very tricky Question.

A pregnancy test can give 3 types of results : false +, False -, and accurate.

Conclusion: In order to maximize accurate results, False - should be minimize.

Support: There are mainly 3 ways we can maximize "accurate results" -
minimize both negative and positive
minimize positive and keep negative constant.
minimize negative and keep positive constant.

Stimulus tell us - minimize negative and Option E tells us constant positive.

If all at-home preg. tests produce the same propositon of false +ve results, then how the customers will seek the lowest roportion of false negative results? I dcould not catch it.
The more you suffer before the test, the less you will do so in the test! :)

This is taken almost directly from an Official Question.

Only two possible ways to be false is false negative and false positive.

If as in choice E there is a constant false positive then the only thing to worry about is false negative.

You guys have sorted this one out!!
