So what scientists are trying to achieve is:

achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals.

And this is an achievement because people used to think this could be limited to manufactured goods.

(A) achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals as once thought to be

AS distorts the meaning and we can not use WHICH because we need that information and even if we don't have AS

achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals once thought to be limited to manufactured goods.

Poor farm animals are not once thought to be the limited to manufactured goods :D , it is the QUALITY AND PRODUCTION

(C) achieving in farm animals a consistency of quality and production that was once thought to be

@logitech

i have a query...

Dont you think there is problem of "dangling modifier" in A?

"As" always introduces a clause..

and if take A..
) achieving a consistency of quality and production in farm animals as once thought to be ..

i feel there is a dearth of a clear antecedent in the clause introduced by "as"

let me know where am i going wrong..

I think you are right. And this is why I believe that A is incorrect.
