Brain Teaser - Dont know the answer

Hi guys,

I was trying a brain teaser in equations and wasnt sure how it could be solved, if it could be solved.

I do not know the answer and will definitely move it to some other forum if this is not the right place. Please let me know.

The problem is attached as an image.

a1 + a2 + a3 (Question asks us to answer the result in terms of a1) where a2 = 2a1 + 3 and a3 = 4a2 + 32.

= a1 + (2a1 + 3) + (4a2 + 32)

= 3a1 + 4(2a1 + 3) + 35

= 3a1 + 8a1 + 12 + 35

= 11a1 + 37

Hope this helps.

If you plug in 2 for x, you can never draw a triangle.

The rule for the sides of a triangle says that no side is greater or equal to the sum of the two other sides and no side is less than or equal to the difference of the two other sides.

So, x has to be between 3 and 7 ==> 3 < x < 7

yvichman wrote:how did you get the width of the walkway?
From the figure, the distance between patio wall and outer wall of walkway is x, width of patio is defined as being 5 more than this width = x+5

Each side of walkway = x + (x+5) + x = 3x + 5

In your diagram, your 120 is the angle referring to bottom portion of the circle (the portion below the base of your triangle) - arc AC, no info is given about that. All we know if about length of arc ABC (24) - the top portion - the portion from the base of your triangle all the way around the circ...

Answer : B (64)

Width of the patio = x+5

Width of the walkway = 3x+5

Area of Walkway = (3x+5) ^2 - (x+5)^2 = 132

solving this equation will give x = 3

So, the side of the patio = 8 and the area of the patio = 64.

What is the OA ?

The Average of a set = Sum of all the numbers / no. of terms in the set A = S/n So, Average of 100 items in the set = Sum of 100 terms / 100 Sum of consecutive numbers can be found by multiplying the number in the middle of the sequence (50) with the number of terms in the sequence ==> 50 * 100 ==> ...

Av of 100+1%of I = 50+I/200
Add 2% of I to it = 2*I/100+I/200+50
= I/40+50
Whats OA ?
You have the same approach as mine but

Av of 100 + 1% of I = 50 + I/100 (Not 50 + I/200)

An other way to look at the problem is below : It is given that p, r, s, t u are an arithmetic sequence. So, think 'k' is the constant the sequence would be : p, p+k, p+k+k, p+k+k+k, p+k+k+k+k p, p+k, p+2k, p+3k, p+4k I) Multiplying by 2 would make essentially the same sequence - so, TRUE 2p, 2p+2k,...
