SC: word placement

by stop@800 » Sat Sep 20, 2008 11:15 am
A number of linguists contend that all of the thousands of languages spoken by the world’s five billion people can be traced back to a common root language.
1. that all of the thousands of languages spoken by the world’s five billion people can be traced
2. that the world’s five billion people speak thousands of languages of which all can be traced
3. the world’s five billion people speak thousands of languages which are all traceable
4. all of the thousands of languages spoken by the world’s five billion people to be traceable
5. the ability to trace all of the thousands of languages that are spoken by the world’s five billion people

Why is 2 a wrong Answer?
is it because of word all?

2 is wrong for 2 reasons,

1. it omits - the - before thousands of language.....
2. linguists' concern is that all the languages can be tranced back......
Therefore languages be our subject..........
They contend that languages spokne by.......ppl.....can be traced .....

is a better in this context than.....

They contenc that ppl spk languages of which all can be traced back.....

We are actually speaking bou language and hence that shud be our main subject

D violates the idiom 'contend that'.

E also changes the meaning of the sentence. Linguists' do contend that languages can be traced back to a common root but they never claim that they have an ability of doing so.

IMO A is the best answer. Please reply if someone finds a flaw in this explanation.

this is Q 157 in OG10.

OG explain cleary that "all of which" is idiomatic. "of which all" is wrong

"contend that" is right

A is left. we do not need to check meaning. though focus of interest should be subject, we do not need to check this

I didnt check any meaning here:

3/4 --wrong because or tracable..

5- wrong--> five billion people BACK to???

2- it may not be correct all the time....but WHICH should be preceded by a COMMA as per GMAT
