spy novel!!

by sandeep1306 » Thu Jul 14, 2011 3:09 am
Regarded by analysts to be the result of tensions during the Cold War, the spy novel reached the zenith of its sales in the 1960s, when most Americans perceived the U.S.S.R. like a constant threat.

A. Regarded by analysts to be the result of tensions during the Cold War, the spy novel reached the zenith of its sales in the 1960s, when most Americans perceived the U.S.S.R. like a constant threat.

B. The spy novel, regarded by analysts to be the result of tensions during the Cold War, reached the zenith of its sales in the 1960s, when most Americans perceived the U.S.S.R. to be a constant threat.

C. Regarded by analysts as the result of tensions during the Cold War, in the 1960s the spy novel reached the zenith of its sales, when most Americans perceived the U.S.S.R. like a constant threat.

D. Reaching the zenith of its sales in the 1960s, the spy novel was regarded by analysts as the result of tensions during the Cold War, when most Americans perceived the U.S.S.R. as a constant threat.

E. Regarded by analysts as the result of tensions during the Cold War, sales of the spy novel reached their zenith in the 1960s, when most Americans perceived the U.S.S.R. as a constant threat.

can someone tell me what is the correct usage for Regard:
regard as
regard to be

However i feel the OA is problematic. D is in much better shape to be the answer.Manhattan's explanation says: " The modifier "reaching the zenith of its sales in the 1960s" incorrectly describes
the spy novel when it should modify sales of the spy novel." for the option D

how can " reaching the zenith of its sales " modify sales of the novel??
can someone from Manhattan comment?
Thanks,
Sandeep

well i thought the correct answer could not be E.
Because Im confused with E because there is a problem with the original meaning of the sentence!
The org. meaning is not reserved in E. What is regarded as the result of the Cold war : the spy novel or the sales of spy novel.

Regard as is the correct form
The more you suffer before the test, the less you will do so in the test! :)

I have few doubts in the above-

1. Is perceive x as y the right idiom or perceive x to be y right????
2. isn't E wrong because as a result of is used when we refer to indirect causation i.e over here increase in sales can be one part of result of tensions????[/b]

"When" must followed a period of time such as the 1960s, leaving only A,B, and E

D changes the meaning while E makes the correction in the error of choice A

where/when did you get this question?

the choices you've listed here are very different from the current version, meaning that the problem didn't come directly from our site (unless you saw it years ago).
