SC: pronoun antecedent

by stop@800 » Wed Oct 08, 2008 12:00 pm
The distance between the two runners, which is over 50 meters, cannot be made up with only three laps to go in the race.

As per explanation in the book:
Relative pronoun which is referring to distance

but I think it should refer to runners.

Is my understanding correct?

Had it been who than it must have referred to runners.
so do we need to apply this logic also while deciding antecedent?

"Which" never refers to people.

To refer people, it should be "who are.." rather than "which is.."

I think which is referring to 'the distance between the two runners' and not just the 'distance'.
