Let X = City MPG
Let X+6 = Highway MPG
462 Miles / x+6 MPG
336 Miles / x MPG
You can set the two equal because a tankful in the car will have an equal number of gallons.
336/x = 462/(x+6)
336x + 2016 = 462X
2016 = 126x
16 = x

A/B = 2/5
(A+4)/2B= 1/3
2B = 5A
-2B =-3A - 12
_____________
0 = 2A -12
12 = 2A
A =6
Plug 6 back in to get B.
2B = 5(6)
2B = 30
B = 15
A + B = Sum of numerator and denominator
6 + 15 = 21
