a1 + a2 + a3 (Question asks us to answer the result in terms of a1) where a2 = 2a1 + 3 and a3 = 4a2 + 32.

= a1 + (2a1 + 3) + (4a2 + 32)

= 3a1 + 4(2a1 + 3) + 35

= 3a1 + 8a1 + 12 + 35

= 11a1 + 37

Hope this helps.
