self-help book

by sjd00d » Sat Feb 14, 2009 3:16 pm
A recent and popular self-help book wryly notes that if adolescence was not so painful, it would have a droll comedic aspect, at least in retrospect.

was not so painful, it
was not so painful, they
were not so painful, they
were not so painful, it
were not so painful, being one

I had selected E, correct choice is D. Question I have is why isn't it in D seemingly modifying book or adolescence and thereby doesn't have a clear antecedent?

I know that the OA is D and that were is required for the subjunctive. It'll be nice to get a specific answer to my question though.

Opening up this one again for discussion.

Isn't adolescence singular? Any explanations? Why is the OA D

Just remember when condition is like that i.e. which is not going to happen in a certain you want (bcoz it already hpnd in a diff way) then USE WERE in place of was

eg. If i were a king , i wud have donated 1 mn $ to wall street. okie...... in that sense
