If x is not equal to 0, is Y greater than 0?
(1) xy = 24
(2) x - y = 5
What do you think is the answer? Are these sufficient?

st(2) if x negative => y must be negative; if x positive => y can be negative or positive. Not sufficient
Combining st(1&2) we get (y+8)(y-3)=0 => y {-8;3} Not sufficient

Say x = -2 then y = -12
Thus when x in not equal to zero y is less than zero.
Say x = 2 then y = 12
Thus when x in not equal to zero y is greater than zero.
Hence, A is Not Sufficient.
(2) x - y = 5
Say x = -2 then y = -7
Thus when x in not equal to zero y is less than zero.
Say x = 10 then y = 5
Thus when x in not equal to zero y is greater than zero.
Hence, B is Not Sufficient.
Combine both,
x - y = 5 => x = 5+y
then xy = (5+y)y = 24
=> y^2 + 5y - 24 = 0
=> y^2 +8y -3y -24 = 0
Thus y = -8 or +3 Not SUff.

Implies either x and y are of same sign.
Not sufficient.
Statement 2: (x - y) = 5
Only impossible case is x negative and y positive. Other combinations are possible.
Not sufficient.
1 & 2 Together: Same conclusion as of statement 2.
Not sufficient.
