Study planning

by cincybengal » Fri Nov 02, 2007 10:51 am
Hey everybody,

New member here, this site is great! :D

I would like to get some study advice. I took one of the GMATPrep tests and got a 550, 36 verbal, 30 quant. I feel definitely weaker in the quant. Fortunately, the program I want to get in targets a 620, and I would like to take the test in December or early January. I have purchased the OG 11, regular Kaplan book, and just ordered a couple Manhattan books to try them out but I haven't gotten them yet. I am taking 5 classes to finish degree, and own a business, so time is difficult to come by. Also, I am 38, so I haven't used this type of math in a long while. Any suggestions on developing a study plan?

Good news is that you're not that far from your target score! Plan to study for a little bit every day, rather than studying once or twice a week for longer periods of time. Ideally, spend 1.5 to 2 hours a day - maybe a little less on very long days and a little more on days when you have more free time. If you want to study more than 2 hours in one day, break it up into two different sessions with at least a 2 hour break in between.

Take a practice test that will analyze your results (GMATPrep doesn't do this, unfortunately) and use that to determine your strengths and weaknesses and set your priorities. If you ordered the 2007 edition of our books, you will be given access to our online CATs. You'll be able to run the same analysis reports that we (the instructors) use when we analyze our students' tests.

Just remember to base your priorities also on what is more common on the test - eg, number properties questions are more common than geometry questions, average questions are more common than standard deviation questions, and so on.
