F/J= 3/2 => F=3J/2 ---(1)

[F+40]/J=5/3 ----- (2)

Solve, (1) and (2) to get J = 240

I noticed you have got this correct... Wondering, if you wanted explanation on another question instead

From eq (1) you get F = 3J/2

Replace F in the eq (2)

[3J/2 + 40]/J=5/3

Cross multiply

3J/2 + 40 = 5J/3

=> 5J/3-3J/2 = 40

=> [10J-9J]/6 = 40 (Took LCM)

=> J/6 = 40

Hence J = 240

Hope this clears it

given ratio February/January=3/2; February=3 January /2 (we cross multiply) equation(i)

We made the equation according to the question

February+40/January=5/3

put the equation (i) February=3 January /2 in February

3 January /2 +40/ January=5/3
solve this equation u will get 3 Jan +80/2 Jan =5/3 then cross multiply
3(3jan +80)=10 Jan
9jan +240=10 Jan
240=10 Jan- 9Jan
240=January Answer
