Most adults in country X consume an increasing amount of fat as they grow older. However, for nearly all adults in country X, the percentage of fat in a person's diet stays the same throughout adult life.

The statements above, if true, most strongly support which one of the following conclusions about adults in country X?

(A) They generally consume more fat than do people of the same age in other countries.
(B) They generally eat more when they are older than they did earlier in their adulthood.
(C) They generally have diets that contain a lower percentage of fat than do the diets of children in country X.
(D) They tend to eat more varied kinds of food as they become older.
(E) They tend to lose weight as they become older.

OA later: Please explain the logic.

Hi loveusonu,

The best way to solve "Draw a Conclusion" aka "Inference" questions is to find the answer choice that MUST BE true given the premises presented.

We basically have 2 premises:

(1) most adults eat more fat as they get older
(2) fat as a % of diet in these same people stays the same.

Since the amount of fat increases, but the % that this amount corresponds to stays the same, it must be the case that the total quantity of food consume increases in proportion with the quantity of fat consumed. In other words, these adults eat more as they get older. The answer is B.

(A) people in other countries is out of scope.

(C) we have no info on children. Only aging adults.

(D) food variety is out of scope. This answer has nothing to do with fat consumption.

(E) We cannot assume that weight loss depends only on fat consumption, so we have no basis for drawing a conclusion about weight loss.

Pick B.

If you have trouble with inference questions (draw a conclusion questions), set topic='CR Inference'and difficulty='600-700' in the Drill Generator.

Good luck,
-Patrick

This one is pretty straight forward. The passage says that they eat more fat as they grow older, but that the percent of fat in their diet stays the same. If the amount of fat you eat increases but the percentage of fat stays the same, then the amount non-fatty foods must increase in order to keep the percentage the same. Thus, the people must, on average, increase the amount food they eat as they grow older. B.

Hope this helps.

For the entire adult phase, the diet for people of country X remains same, and the diet increases fat in old age phase.
A-- Passage talks about country X only
B--This is rephrase of the argument
C--No mention of children
D--Varies diets is not a part of argument
E--completely talks about alien things...out of scope

(A) They generally consume more fat than do people of the same age in other countries. {not mention of other countries in the passage}
(B) They generally eat more when they are older than they did earlier in their adulthood. {perfect fit}
(C) They generally have diets that contain a lower percentage of fat than do the diets of children in country X. {kind of goes against the statement, plus there is no mention of children}
(D) They tend to eat more varied kinds of food as they become older. {the passage says the fat % is same, so they can eat as much varied they like }
(E) They tend to lose weight as they become older. {no mention of weight loss}
