I think identifying the pattern would be the fastest way of doing this.

I second Mayur's thoughts. I dont think there is faster way of doing this problem.
I think such problems are always based on patterns since nobody expects you to calculate all the 35 terms.

Well you have already done this but just for the sake of others who are not able to identify the pattern.

2,7,22,67,202,607

tens digit repeats itself after every 2 digits.
units digit repeats itself after every other digit.

35th term will have 2 at the tens place and 2 at the units place.

2+2 = 4
