1000 CR - TEST B - Q1

by anju » Tue Jul 08, 2008 2:53 pm
Below is an excerpt from a letter that was sent by the chairman of a corporation to the stockholders.
A number of charges have been raised against me, some serious, some trivial. Individuals seeking to control the corporation for their own purposes have demanded my resignation. Remember that no court of law in any state has found me guilty of any criminal offense whatsoever. In the American tradition, as you know, an individual is considered innocent until proven guilty. Furthermore, as the corporation’s unbroken six-year record of growth will show, my conduct of my official duties as chairman has only helped enhance the success of the corporation, and so benefited every stockholder.
Which of the following can be properly inferred from the excerpt?
(A) The chairman believes that all those who have demanded his resignation are motivated by desire to control the corporation for their own purposes.
(B) Any misdeeds that the chairman may have committed were motivated by his desire to enhance the success of the corporation.
(C) The chairman is innocent of any criminal offense.
(D) The corporation has expanded steadily over the past six years.
(E) Any legal proceedings against the chairman have resulted in his acquittal.

OA is A. Pls. provide explanation on OA and what is wrong in A to be OA.

Thanks, Svaradhan!

I still did not understnad why OA is D. As inference is somehting that you have to inferr from the stimulus and not specifically mentioned. D is specifically mentioned in the stimulus and hence need not be inferred. The inference is as mentioned in A. Any thoughts?

Ok, is the official answer A or D? The other thread has D down but here, you put up A. So I'm confused. But, I'll explain my reasoning nonetheless. I agree with whomever that D should be the answer.

A--This answer choice REVERSES whats given. Specifically, we are told that indvds wanting control for their own purposes--->asked for resignation. But that doesn't mean that you can flip it around. The answer choice states the reverse. That those asking for this guy's resignation ---> did so for their own purposes. Not necessarily. So this isn't logically ok.
B--this is an opinion. Inference question answers MUST BE TRUE/FACT.
C--Just because the court hasn't found him guilty, doesn't mean that he isn't actually guilty. Perhaps he got lucky and wasn't caught.
D--This is a fact as stated in the stimulus. So yes, true.
E--too much info, we don't know this.

Ok .. got it..

To avoid confusion OA is D... I was debating between A and D and wasn't sure why A is wrong.

Thanks

Hi anju,
point to note..

I have noticed that Whenever we are asked to infer in gmat ,dont ever try to stress yourself and go deep in the argument.Infer as less as possible.Look more closely at the facts.Sometimes there would be a premise re -stated in the answer choice with a subtle change in the wording with a new fact added to it..

i hope this helps..

thanks.

I would go for D as well. It seems the best and safest among the rest.
