1000 CR Test 2 Section II Q24

by its_me07 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 12:57 pm
What should be the OA?
i chose D but the OA given in document is E

There is little point in looking to artists for insights into political issues. Most of them hold political views that are less insightful than those of any reasonably well-educated person who is not an artist. Indeed, when taken as a whole, the statements made by artists, including those considered to be great, indicate that artistic talent and political insight are rarely found together.
Which one of the following can be inferred from the passage?
(A) There are no artists who have insights into political issues.
(B) A thorough education in art makes a person reasonably well educated.
(C) Every reasonably well-educated person who s not an artist has more insight into political issues than any artist.
(D) Politicians rarely have any artistic talent.
(E) Some artists are no less politically insightful than some reasonably well-educated persons who are not artists.

Hi its_me,

Inference question generally do not require you to make any assumptions and should be answered from the specific information in the passage.
To answer this question let us evaluate every answer choice seperately:

(A) There are no artists who have insights into political issues.
This answer choice is too extreme and has leaped to a strong conclusion that there are 'NO' artists.... !!! ELIMINATE

(B) A thorough education in art makes a person reasonably well educated.
This answer choice can be considered 'Out of Scope' since we are not dealing with education in arts but just educated people and Artists. ELIMINATE

(C) Every reasonably well-educated person who s not an artist has more insight into political issues than any artist.
If you read this answer it is conluding the reverse of what is being stated.
ELIMINATE

(D) Politicians rarely have any artistic talent.
Read this answer choice 'rarely'!!!! sounds extreme and out of scope. The argument is dealing with the political view of artists and NOT stating about the 'artistic talent ' of politicians. ELIMINATE

(E) Some artists are no less politically insightful than some reasonably well-educated persons who are not artists.
Perfect this answer choice is making use of 'Some' which is not extreme and making use of the specific information given in the argument rather than going out of scope. This will be the best choice of all.
CORRECT

Hope it helps

Thanks
Komal

Yes..this will mostly be the case for inference questions because it would require you to make assumption like (if X causing y then Y can be caused by X) such info is not given in the argument. For inference stick to just WHAT IS SPECIFICALLY GIVEN IN THE PREMISE.

GMAT does not wan't you to use your knowledge in the answer choice. Any answer choice which require you to apply knowldge outside the scope of argument is incorrect.

Hope you got what I mean

Thanks
Komal
